Good Friday begins the Easter Weekend

Good Friday comes at the end of Holy Week and sets the scene for Easter Sunday, when Christians celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus. Christians say it proves he was the Son of God. . I have written about Easter before and I hope you find what I wrote helpful, whether or not you agree. Now I want to concentrate specifically on the day of Jesus’s death.

Why does Good Friday matter?

Obviously, you can’t have a resurrection without a death, but do we need to dwell on the details of Jesus’s death? His death and the suffering which led up to it demonstrate that Jesus was also human. Gods don’t die and they can’t really suffer. They certainly won’t experience doubt or fear as Jesus did the night before his death. Can anyone be both human and divine? Not half-and-half but totally both? Theoretically, no! That’s the mystery. Christians don’t explain it. They believe it by faith.

Does it matter to us?

We all experience suffering at times, some people more than others. When you do, especially if it’s intense or if it goes on for long, you might doubt God. You might think, if God does exist, He can’t know how you feel. He might seem a long way away. However, you can’t really say that of Jesus. When we pray to Jesus, we know we’re talking to someone who does know what it’s like. And then some. The Book of Hebrews in the Bible says. “We do not have a high priest who cannot sympathise with our weaknesses but one who has been tempted in all things as we are, but without sin.” Hebrews Chapter 4 verse 14. Of course, he suffered more than temptation, but the same point applies.

Ever suffered defeat?

You might have thought that Jesus’s whole mission was a failure when it ended in death, but the Bible says it was all part of God’s successful plan. I won’t go into all that now. However, just think that what looks and feels like defeat might actually be an essential part of your victory.  So Good Friday is important for us just as much as Easter Sunday.

My Easter Message

I wish you a Happy Easter and hope you can rejoice with Christians around the world on Sunday. But I also hope you give some thought to Good Friday, especially if you are having a bad time.

Finally, if you get the Christian message but still can’t get the Church, you’re in good company. Perhaps my book How to Cope with the Church will be some help to you.
