Bible stories can be retold in various ways

Bible stories amuse and educate when people tell them well. I have often found that is true when I take part in Open the Book, which is for primary school children, but what about older children and adults?

Bible stories include Noah’s Ark

The Ark Experience was a week-long exhibition in St Paul’s church, Penketh, Warrington, which told the story of Noah and related it to  today’s issues. I wrote about the event in one recent post and about its relevance in another.

How did people respond?

Primary schools came in the mornings, but people of all ages came in the afternoons. Some seemed interested only in the beautiful knitted animals, but many also took time to consider the questions about the meaning of the story. Contrary to what many people might expect, young adults took more interest than any other age group.

What does this mean?

People often say that young people reject religion today. It may be that they do not want traditional church services but many do seem to be interested in religion in a wider sense. Bible stories raise questions about life and a lot of young people find these relevant. The church needs to think outside the box and present the stories in ways that are interesting and thought-provoking . They also need to use everyday modern language.

What about you?

If you find the church an obstacle to your faith rather than a help, try another church. I wrote about this in How to Cope with the Church. In Warrington, apart from St Paul’s, Church Collective expresses Christianity in ways many non-churchgoers find relevant. I do not say they are the only ones. Look around.
